Virginia Distillery Co has teamed with Central Waters Brewing Co as the former continues to grow its The Brewer’s Coalition, a limited-edition series of American Single Malt whiskies finished in casks from breweries across the country.

Central Waters Brewing Co. Black Gold Imperial Stout Cask Finish American Single Malt combines Virginia Distillery Co.’s whisky with the Wisconsin’s Central Waters Brewing Co. Black Gold Imperial Stout.

Twelve barrels were sourced for this release, which was first aged in ex-bourbon barrels for over five years before being finished in Imperial Stout barrels and is bottled at 100 proof.

“Central Waters has built a strong reputation in the Midwest and beyond for their commitment to quality and barrel-aged beers,” said Gareth Moore, CEO of Virginia Distillery Co. “Finishing our American Single Malt in Black Gold Imperial Stout barrels allowed us to create a whisky with remarkable complexity, and it’s exactly the type of collaboration The Brewer’s Coalition was designed for.”

“Partnering with Virginia Distillery Co. has been an exciting opportunity for us,” added Anello Mollica, Vice President at Central Waters Brewing Co. “Black Gold has long been the top-rated beer in Wisconsin and a favorite among our fans, and seeing its influence extend into whisky in such a distinctive way is incredibly rewarding. It’s a proud moment for us to bring a bit of Wisconsin craft beer tradition into this
collaboration.”

Central Waters Brewing Co. Black Gold Imperial Stout Cask Finish American Single Malt is available in limited quantities online and at select retailers nationwide for $54.99.

Woodford Reserve introduces its first American Single Malt via its Distillery Series, a 12-Year-Old American Single Malt Whiskey.

To craft this new expression, Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall used 100% malted barley, triple pot distilled, and aged for 12 years in used whiskey barrels. “I’m excited to release this 12-year-old American Single Malt, a whiskey that proves just how essential long aging in used barrels is for unlocking its full flavor potential. Its lighter color and nuanced flavor profile demonstrate the importance of time. I believe it’s one of the most authentic American Single Malts ever released — the first of its kind,” said McCall.

The 12-Year-Old American Single Malt is 90.4 proof and is part of Woodford Reserve’s Distillery Series, which was created to push the distillery’s creative boundaries and introduce new expressions to the market.

Woodford Reserve Distillery Series 12-Year-Old American Single Malt Whiskey  is available in limited quantities at select Kentucky retailers and at the Woodford Reserve Distillery for $99.99.

Westland is paying homage to its home state’s craft beer and wine culture again with a Beer Cask Finish and a Wine Cask Finish.

Washington State is well known both for its winemaking and craft brewing traditions, so Westland focused on the two as part of its Cask Exploration Series in its continued commitment to bottling the Pacific Northwest “sense of place.”

Beer Cask Finish American Single Malt Whiskey Batch No. 2 is made with Westland’s signature five malt and Washington pale malt and matured 6-9 years in New American Oak
and ex-bourbon and ex-rye whiskey barrels. The 92 proof expression is finished in Stout/Porter, Brown Ale, Imperial Munich Lager and Foudre Ale barrels.

Wine Cask Finish American Single Malt Whiskey Batch No. 2 starts with Westland’s signature five malt mashbill and is matured for 5-9 years in first and second fill American Oak barrels. This 92 proof expression is finished in Tempranillo, WA Red Blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot barrels.

“Westland set out to express the place we live,” says Shane Armstrong, Westland’s Master Blender. “The Cask Exploration Series extends that through collaboration with brewers and winemakers of the PNW – notes woven with our whiskey are pieces to the puzzle of our region. The second batch incorporates new varietals/beer types made from trusted Washington producers, continuing the connection from a different vantage.”

Originally launched in 2024, Westland’s Cask Exploration Series delves into the vast possibilities of cask finishing.

Available via e-commerce this August and nationwide this September, Westland’s Beer Cask Finish American Single Malt Whiskey, Batch No. 2 (12,840 total bottles) and Westland’s Wine Cask Finish American Single Malt Whiskey, Batch No. 2 (9,048 total bottles) will be available for $74.99.

Minden Mill Distilling announces the release of its American Single Malt Whiskey as as the category is established as an official and distinct U.S. spirits category.

As a member of the Estate Whiskey Alliance and a holder of a Nevada estate distillery license, Minden Mill produces “ground-to-glass” whiskeys. Minden Mill American Single Malt is made from 100% estate-grown barley, malted on site. The grain is mashed with M1 yeast, and the water is sourced from onsite well, which is fed by snowpack from the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe. That water is filtered for years through granite, making it some of the purest water in the world.

Minden Mill American Single Malt is distilled in dual, all-copper Forsyth stills hammered by hand in Speyside, Scotland – two of only a few in the U.S. The fourth-generation family-owned coppersmiths are known for their high quality and respect for the tradition and heritage of fine single malt Scotch production. Rather than using the steam commonly used to heat stills in most American whiskey production, the distillery’s cutting-edge heating systems use a thermal oil-heated calandria at the bottom of the stripping and spirit stills to reach higher temperatures than steam.

The distillery also implements a unique barrel aging process for the Nevada high desert climate. The whiskey is aged for five years in a barrel regime of Oloroso sherry, ex-bourbon and American oak casks, along with re-charred wine and sherry butts in climate-controlled rickhouses. The rickhouses are calibrated to mimic the temperature and humidity of Speyside, a nod to traditional single malt Scotch whisky aging methods. The exceptionally low humidity of the Nevada region, this temperature control ensures the proper expansion and contraction into the wood, along with well-defined evaporation levels to condense the rich flavors of the whiskey.

“Minden Mill has the unique opportunity to help introduce the U.S. consumer to the American Single Malt Whiskey category,” said Minden Mill Master Distiller Joe O’Sullivan. “This is a true representation of a single estate whiskey, highlighting the unique terroir of Nevada’s high desert and the extreme Sierra Nevada temperaments – from very short growing seasons to the scorching summer days and brutally cold nights. The subtle exploration of flavor based on regional differences is what made Scotch Whisky so compelling to consumers, and we can replicate that experience in Minden with American Single Malt.”

Prior to joining Minden Mill, O’Sullivan was an apprentice to Steven McCarthy, the “godfather” of American Single Malt, during the category’s foundational period. A member of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission, O’Sullivan was an integral part of the efforts which led to the 2025 TTB ruling which established standards for American Single Malt Whiskey.

Westward Whiskey recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with the release of its Milestone Edition No. 2 – A Discovery of Spice.

Milestone is born from whiskey drawn by Westward’s Master Blender Miles Munroe from a twenty-one barrel Solera system created exclusively for this offering. Used for centuries by European wine makers, the Solera method allows Westward to continuously age and blend some of its oldest whiskeys with rare cask types.

“With Milestone, we have selected our most distinctive whiskeys and crafted a 21-barrel Solera system of slow-proofed spirit that will continue to evolve over time to ensure our story and vision will also progress into the future,” said Westward Whiskey Master Blender Miles Munroe. “Pulling from the archives, we have integrated some of our oldest whiskeys with a selection of beautiful wine and wood finishes, both from our home near in Willamette Valley and from coveted winemaking regions around the world.”

Each year, Westward draws just a small fraction of the whiskey for the Milestone release, replacing it with another whiskey from the barrel house. Much like the idea of an infinity bottle, introducing new whiskeys into the Solera system while continuously blending small amounts of whiskey from one barrel into another creates an always evolving palette of Westward flavors. The result is that no two Milestone expressions are ever be the same. With each release year, Munroe captures a set of flavors that can never be reproduced.

As a follow-up to last year’s inaugural release, Edition No. 2 (97 proof) reflects an unrivaled expression of spice. Inspired by a visit to Taiwan and a street food pairing he experienced with each of the distillery’s flagship expressions, Munroe embarked on a journey to take the distillery’s  signature spice notes to new heights by incorporating exotic woods from their cask finishes.

For this 20th anniversary bottling, Milestone is packaged in a new custom glass bottle designed to reflect the company’s Northwest Heritage and echo the landscape of its terrain. The bottle is accompanied by a weighted closure sculpted with the company’s signature blackbird. Each bottle is individually numbered and placed in a gift box inspired by Westward’s Northwest heritage.“For twenty years, we have pushed the boundaries to elevate American whiskey. Harnessing this maker’s knowledge, we challenged ourselves to explore what the ultimate expression of Westward Whiskey could be,” said Westward Whiskey Founder & CEO Thomas Mooney. “Milestone is our masterpiece – a truly special whiskey that celebrates the legacy of our past and the promise of our future.”

Westward Whiskey Milestone Edition No. 2 – A Discovery of Spice is available now for $249.95.

To celebrate National Virginia Day (Sept. 14), Virginia Distillery Company launched its newest expression, Blue Ridge Select Toasted Oak Finish American Single Malt Whisky.

The release is said to be a “tribute to the essence of the state’s Blue Ridge Mountains,” combining ingredients with aging in Virginia’s dynamic climate to produce an American Single Malt. Crafted from 100% malted barley and aged for a minimum of four years in first-fill bourbon barrels from premium Kentucky distilleries, this 93 proof whiskey is further refined by a finishing period in virgin toasted oak barrels from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

“Our goal with Blue Ridge Toasted Oak was to create a whisky that captures the spirit of our Blue Ridge Mountain home,” said Gareth Moore, CEO at Virginia Distillery Company. “By combining first-fill bourbon barrels with virgin toasted oak barrels from Virginia, we’ve achieved a whisky with exceptional depth and complexity. We are proud to celebrate National Virginia Day with this unique expression and share it with both our loyal customers and those new to the American Single Malt category.”

Virginia Distillery Company’s Blue Ridge Select Toasted Oak Finish American Single Malt Whisky will be available this fall for $44.95.

Wolves unveiled its first flagship whiskey, Wolves American Single Malt, now available year-round.

Moving beyond its previous focus on limited editions, the California whiskey brand aims to capture the essence of the American Single Malt category with this new release.

The 96 proof expression is aged for five years in California wine barrels in the Arizona heat. Afterward, it’s blended from hand-selected barrels and finished in aged cognac casks.

Its packaging reflects deep Pacific hues and features topographical linework that visually represents the rugged and varied terrain of the American West. Subtle finishes evoke the natural landscape, such as layers of sediment or the rings of a tree trunk.

“We were captivated by the challenge of creating a standard-bearer in the emerging category of American Single Malt,” says Jennifer Marks, President of Wolves. “We’re proud of our innovative approach and the result, a contemporary yet timeless classic that can be enjoyed year-round.”

Wolves American Single Malt is available online and at select retailers nationwide for $89.99.

The Cedar Ridge Distillery has released the third in a series of limited-edition expressions of their American Single Malt, The QuintEssential: The Untitled Cigar Malt Project.

The release is a blend of single malts first aged in Cedar Ridge ex-bourbon barrels and finished in the following casks: first-fill Amontillado Sherry: Cedar Ridge Wine, a Madeira inspired wine made at Cedar Ridge; New French Oak, New American Oak, Char #3 and Peated Malt finished in a Ruby Port Cask. It is bottled at 1214.9 proof.

“The vision for this release was a whiskey evoking the rich experience of a cigar,” said Cedar Ridge Distillery Master Blender Murphy Quint. “It features bold notes of tobacco, a subtle hint of smoke, a balanced character and a lengthy finish.”

“While each cask plays an important role in the blend, the peated malt delivers an important feature,” he adds. “Its smoky influence, though subtle due to being blended with non-peated single malts, lingers long on the finish, a transition that emerges after the initial notes of sherry and Madeira have faded. This was a key element to the project, achieving a finish that lingers pleasantly, much like the subtle hint of smoke you might experience long after savoring a cigar. This is a whiskey I’ve envisioned for a long time, and I thoroughly enjoyed putting it together.”

Named for Quint, previous QuintEssential releases included The QuintEssential Pete & Sherri and The QuintEssential Portside.

Cedar Ridge’s The QuintEssential: The Untitled Cigar Malt Project retails for $99.99.

Westward Whiskey introduces its first club release of 2024, Westward Whiskey Vienna Malt.

Formed by fate, this expression is about rolling with the punches and achieving excellence. When the distillery’s grain supplier delivered two-row Vienna malted barley instead of their standard two-row pale, Westward’s team of brewers-turned-distillers had a decision to make: back down or venture forward. This expression is the embodiment of bold, decisive action, blending the technique of Westward Whiskey Original with destiny.

“Largely unexplored by whiskey-makers but prized by brewers for its red color and rich, full-bodied character that appears in Oktoberfests and some IPAs, using Vienna malted barley empowered us to create a well-rounded whiskey with notes of biscuit, honeyed malt, and rich caramel,” Westward Whiskey Master Blender Miles Munroe. “Thanks to our roots as craft brewers and our desire to push the boundaries of traditional whiskey-making, we’ve ventured into the unknown and brought back something special.”

Launched in 2019 and previously available exclusively in Oregon, The Westward Whiskey Club reaches consumers in more than 35 states. Members are granted exclusive access to club-only whiskey releases, club-only events led by Westward’s team of experts, and fellowship with others who celebrate American whiskey innovation. Members can choose from two different tiers: Expedition Club and Founder’s Club. Expedition Club members will receive one bottle of whiskey in Westward’s four yearly Club releases (approx. $100 quarterly), and Founder’s Club members will enjoy three bottles per quarter (approx. $300 quarterly). Shipping is included to more than 35 states. Westward Whiskey Vienna Malt is bottled at 90 proof and priced at $99.95.
