Middleburg Barrel Company aims to platform Virginia whiskey with its 1787 Provenance Bourbon.
Inspired by a combination of liquid, barrels and expertise, the brand’s inaugural releases showcase two Kentucky-distilled bourbons, 1787 Provenance Straight Bourbon Whiskey and 1787 Provenance 14-Year Straight Bourbon Whiskey. The former was distilled in Bardstown and is 7 years old and 107 proof, while the latter was distilled in Frankfort, is 14 years old and is 122 proof.
What sets Provenance apart is the barrel selection. At Provenance Estate in Middleburg, VA, each cask is selected by Principal Whiskeymaker Jay West. He built his reputation reviewing thousands of whiskeys and amassed a dedicated following among collectors. The barrels rest in newly built rickhouses on the 121-acre estate.
Guests can tour the property, taste from barrels aging on site, and select their own bourbon through a hands-on “thieving” process, under the Provenance team’s guidance. For those seeking something more exclusive, entire barrels from its 2,000 can also be purchased.
