It’s that time of the year again. Every year, Goose Island Beer Co. releases its Bourbon County Brand Stout line to honor their legacy as the creator of the world’s first bourbon barrel-aged stout. Each variant that follows offers a unique expression, using different ingredients and barrels to highlight the complexity of the beer.

This year, the Bourbon County Brand release tells a story of “metamorphosis—where barrels, time, and innovation evolve” the beer bottled. Its Cherries Jubilee Stout, finished in cognac casks, and Chocolate Praline Stout, aged in single-use bourbon barrels, show how time and additions deepen character. The Proprietor’s Stout, inspired by Baklava, includes toasted pistachios, walnuts and cinnamon to highlight the nuttiness.

This year also spotlights the barrels themselves, with collaborations that strengthen the bond between beer and whiskey. The Double Barrel Stout blends two sets of Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond barrels while the Reserve Stout, aged in 17th edition Parker’s Heritage 10-year-old rye whiskey barrels, pays homage to whiskey tradition.

The 2025 Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Family includes Original Stout, Cherries Jubilee Stout, Chocolate Praline Stout, Proprietor’s Stout, Double Barrel Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond Stout andParker’s Heritage Reserve Stout.

For the first time, Goose Island is also debuting 10 oz. four-pack bottles of Bourbon County Brand Original Stout.

Last week I attended the launch of Woodford Reserve’s Double Double Oaked at the beautiful Studio 525. Kicking off fashion week, it was hosted by acclaimed designer Sergio Hudson. Also in attendance was Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall, who held private tastings all night of this sought-after Bourbon that always sells out fast. With great tunes, classic bourbon, and an eclectic mix of tastemakers, fashionistas, and lovers of bourbon, it was a dope event that kicked off New York Fashion Week well.

Product notes:

“Double Double Oaked is handcrafted by finishing fully-mature Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon for an additional two years in a second, heavily toasted, lightly charred, new oak barrel (hence the name Double Double Oaked). The 700 ml bottle, presented at 90.4 proof, has a suggested retail price of $199.99”

On June 25th, I was invited to the historic Elizabeth Street Gardens in New York’s NoLita neighborhood  to experience The Glenlivet’s 200th Anniversary Party.

The star of the show was The Glenlivet Fusion Cask which they describe as “a first-of-its-kind expression that invites drinkers to explore new levels of flavor.” From our choice of two cocktails and a tasting, partygoers were delighted to taste the new juice from The Glenlivet Rum & Bourbon Fusion Cask Selection.

We were treated to an exquisite speciality cake by Laila Gohar – a celebrated artist who creates with food. The seventeen foot cake was decorated in various hues of color and intricate pipework to signify the partnership of The Glenlivet’s distinctive identity with Gohar’s signature style. It was as delicious as it looked!

Sipping the Fusion Cask amongst the fireflies, wonderful music, and delectable cake, it was a great way to usher in the summer and celebrate The Glenlivets 200th.

More from their official press release:

For 200 years, The Glenlivet has followed in the footsteps of its founder George Smith with its storied history of innovation from flavor to craftmanship. This spirit of innovation is alive today as The Glenlivet continues to evolve the category, most recently marked by the release of The Glenlivet Rum and Bourbon Fusion Cask in February 2024. This category-first single malt Scotch whisky offers a luxurious new depth of flavor by selectively finishing its signature single malt Scotch whisky in bespoke casks made by dismantling and reassembling first-fill rum and bourbon barrels. This distinctive technique imparts a harmonious fusion of luscious fruit and caramel-toffee notes.

Barrel Global recently announced the launch of a new bespoke service dubbed the Kentucky Bourbon Retreat. This immersive experience welcomes consumers and corporate clients to visit a distillery in Kentucky where they will distill their very own barrels of bourbon that will then be aged and bottled to their exact specifications.

A fully customizable itinerary awaits, as guests arrive in Kentucky for a three-day bourbon-making adventure under the guidance and curation of an esteemed bourbon distiller. During the trip, attendees receive a tutorial in distillation and barreling – which starts with selecting a mashbill to create a taste profile suited to your palate, tasting the new mash and the distillate, and making the correct cut between heads, hearts and tails before proofing the liquid. Then, guests return to the distillery on their final day in Kentucky to fill their own barrels with distillate, seal them, check for leaks, and finally roll them into the rickhouse.

Once the barrels are proofed, the distillery partner stores them for the required aging in their on-site warehouses until they are at the desired maturation and ready for bottling. The owners of these newly-minted barrels may determine their future use – from personal consumption and corporate gifting to launching their own mini bourbon brand or reselling the barrels on the open market.

“Our Kentucky Bourbon Retreat democratizes barrel ownership by allowing individuals to create their very own batch of barrels with a truly bespoke mashbill,” said Barrel Global Founder George Koutsakis. “Distilleries typically require a minimum order of more than 100 barrels for such a service, but given our distillery relationships, we’re able to bring that minimum number down to a more palatable 10 barrels.”

“Bourbon distilling has captivated a global audience, and this experience allows retreat attendees to step into the highly coveted role of ‘distiller’ for a day under the careful tutelage of a highly trained distilling expert while respecting the traditions, legacies, and expertise that these notable craftspeople bring to the industry,” he added.

In partnership with Casey Jones Distillery, the inaugural Kentucky Bourbon Retreat launched last month and is aimed at corporate clients, the hospitality industry, families, and friends. Barrel Global will expand with additional experiences and distillery partners in the months ahead.

Pricing for Kentucky Bourbon Retreat is $35,000 dependent on group size and barrel yield, which includes 10 newly-distilled bourbon barrels with a completely bespoke mashbill, full participation in the distilling process. Additional guests may be added for an incremental cost.

  • 1/2 oz fresh Lemon juice
  • 10 loose mint leaves

Filmland Spirits recently announced its debut in the U.S. market unveiling three core whiskey expressions – Moonlight Mayhem! Bourbon, Moonlight Mayhem! Extended Cut Cask Strength Bourbon, and Ryes of the Robots Rye Whiskey.

Combining its enthusiasm for whiskey and movies, Filmland aims to bring people together through tales and spirits. Filmland approaches whiskey production with a moviemaking mindset. The creative team started with their vision for an original retro B-Movie concept. This evolves into a script with robots and monsters, heroes and villains and a plot. From there, California based company designs an original movie poster in pulp-style art consistent with the genre; this becomes the front label for each expression.

Consumers will have the chance to preview each story on the back label which shows a synopsis and the key characters. Those wanting to know more can head to Filmland’s website to read snippets of the script, view storyboards and watch an animated trailer. Filmland’s whiskey are sourced from throughout the U.S. Once “on location” in Kentucky, they are blended, finished and bottled.

“After a lifetime of blending together passions for storytelling, movie-making and whiskey, we are thrilled to invite everyone to the premiere of Filmland Spirits!” says Filmland Spirits CEO Troy Bolotnick. “I’m incredibly proud of the crew we’ve assembled and all the creativity and skill that has resulted in our award winning bourbons and rye. They are delicious and fun, outrageous and unique and I can’t wait for our audience of customers to dim the lights, grab a bottle and enjoy the show!”

Consumers who wish to purchase Moonlight Mayhem! Bourbon ($54.99), Moonlight Mayhem! Extended Cut Cask Strength Bourbon ($79.99) and Ryes of the Robots Rye Whiskey ($59.99) can do so at select stores in California and Kentucky. Filmland Spirits are also available for purchase via their website and select e-commerce retailers.

Autumn has become as synonymous with pumpkin spice lattes as Uggs, whether we like it or not (thanks, Starbuck’s). This week’s cocktail, courtesy of Fistful of Bourbon, might make that a bit easier to swallow. BTW, this recipe makes two drinks… or one big one.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz of Fistful of Bourbon
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 tablespoon of pumpkin spice
  • 1/2 cup of coffee

Instructions:

Add all ingredients except for the bourbon in a warming vessel – this could be a pot on the stove for a few minutes or in a bowl, covered with Saran Wrap, cut 3 slits and microwave for 1 minute. Once warm, pour in bourbon and transfer into a mug. Top with whip cream and dust with pumpkin spice.
