Bunnahabhain has released its annual small-batch 12 Year Old Cask Strength 2025 Edition.

Following a hiatus in 2024, the expression is back. Bottled at 112.8 proof, the 2025 edition draws predominantly from second-fill Oloroso sherry casks, with a blend of first-fill and refill casks hand-selected by Master Blender Julieann Fernandez.

“One of the greatest joys for me as a Master Blender is tasting a whisky in its purest form directly from cask, and it brings me real pleasure to be able to share that experience with our community of whisky lovers,” said Bunnahabhain Master Blender Julieann Fernandez. “Not every whisky stands up to Cask Strength, but Bunnahabhain is absolutely made for it.”

Islay’s most northerly distillery since 1881, the maturation in Bunnahabhain’s warehouses exposes the whisky to intense maritime conditions, allowing the distillate to develop salinity and a spice complexity.

Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength 2025 Edition is available for $148.99.

Bunnahabhain recently announce the release of its 30-year-old and 40-year-old single malts in the United States.

Aged in sherry casks, the 30-year-old and 40-year-old expressions represent Islay craftsmanship, reflecting the distillery’s unpeated style and coastal influences.

The 30 year expression was distilled in small batches, matured in 100% sherry casks and is 92.6 proof. As the newest member of the Bunnahabhain core range, this first batch release of a 30-year whisky is one of the distilleries’ oldest single malts. This expression, a rich and sweet dram, was matured exclusively in ex-sherry casks in coastal warehouses at the distillery and is non-chill filtered, with a natural color.

Bunnahabhain’s 40 Year Whisky was matured for four decades in a warehouse by the sea in casks that were all but forgotten. Bunnahabhain’s blending team discovered them while reviewing the warehouse ledgers. Sourced from wines and spirits merchant J.G Turney, these casks have been home to this whisky for the past forty years.

“Our 30- and 40-year-old whiskies are a tribute to Bunnahabhain’s dedication to quality and patience,” said Juliann Fernandez, Bunnahabhain Master Distiller. “These releases have been nurtured with the utmost care, allowing the complex layers of flavor to develop over time. From the rich sherry notes to the coastal breeze woven into every drop, these whiskies invite true connoisseurs to experience the essence of Islay at its finest.”

Bunnahabhain 30 Year Whisky and Bunnahabhain 40 Year Whisky are available now for $999.99 and $3,785.99, respectively.

The whiskey secondary market is fast and furious these days. Beyond those willing to pay great amounts for limited run bottles, there are brokers like Last Drop and Cask 88 who score access to whole barrels of unique whiskies from distillers all over the world. The latter recently introduced a highly limited-edition series of four whiskies matured in smaller quarter-sized casks to their range of independent bottlings.

Cask 88’s the Eighty Eight Series features small batch expressions from Bunnahabhain, Highland Park, Caol Ila and Bladnoch, and offers whisky enthusiasts the opportunity to explore the impact of cask size on the maturation of the whisky.

A Bladnoch 27 Year Old (55.6% ABV; 70cl; $569.99), is the oldest whisky in the series and was originally held in an ex-sherry Hogshead before being finished in an ex-sherry quarter cask for 9 months. A Caol Ila 9 Year Old (58.9% ABV; 70cl; $239.99), was originally held in a refill Hogshead before being finished in an ex-sherry quarter cask for 9 months. A Bunnahabhain 9 Year Old (57.8% ABV; 70cl; $239.99) was originally matured in a refill ex-sherry butt before being finished in an ex-sherry quarter cask for 3 months. A Highland Park 14 Year Old (54.8% ABV; 70cl; $154.99) was originally held in an ex-bourbon Hogshead before being finished in an ex-sherry quarter cask for 7 months.

Quarter casks, at one eighth of the size of a standard cask to hold whisky, are capable of holding approximately 50 liters of whisky each. Each quarter cask yields 88 bottles of whisky. “The smaller cask size maximizes the contact between the spirit and the wood, theoretically producing a whisky with a stronger, more complex flavor,” said APAC Sales Director Patrick Costello. “Whereas the wider industry favors larger casks to produce whisky on scale, we wanted to select something a little different, and focus on producing small batch whiskies that excite the senses.”

The Eighty Eight Series is the second release of Scottish whisky independently bottled under the Cask 88 brand. The first bottling under the Edinburgh-based whisky broker and independent bottler’s brand was a 45 Year Old Ben Nevis 1972 Single Malt from the Cask 88 Scottish Folklore series, with a design inspired by the Scottish legend of the Cù-Sìth.

All four whiskies in The Eighty Eight Series will be available from Whisky Foundation for worldwide delivery and from Cask 88.
