Buffalo Trace Distillery’s Sazerac Rye is getting high (with its proof) with its Sazerac Rye Whiskey 100 Proof.

Developed in response to demand from bartenders and whiskey enthusiasts, the expression was extensively developed to ensure the new proof didn’t overtake the Sazerac’s signature flavor.

“As the whiskey of America’s first cocktail, Sazerac Rye has played a central role in rye whiskey’s resurgence,” said Andrew Duncan, Global Brand Director at Buffalo Trace Distillery. “Bartenders have increasingly embraced 100 proof ryes for the balance, strength and versatility they provide. Sazerac Rye 100 Proof offers greater control over flavor and balance, empowering creativity behind the bar. It’s built to be the perfect cocktail whiskey.”

“Sazerac Rye 100 Proof was crafted specifically with bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts in mind,” added Harlen Wheatley, Master Distiller at Buffalo Trace Distillery. With the renewed interest in classic cocktails that rely on a rye whiskey base, we focused on ensuring this higher-proof spirit delivers complexity and structure without losing its signature profile. We’re proud of the result and look forward to seeing it elevate cocktails around the world.”

A longtime favorite among bartenders, Sazerac Rye Whiskey honors both the character of New Orleans and the history of American spirits.

Sazerac Rye Whiskey 100 Proof is now for $29.99.

This week’s cocktail, courtesy of Nashville’s L.A. Jackson, might have my favorite name ever. At first, I thought this Old Fashioned riff was a political statement, but it’s not. Google it on your own time but NSFW.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz of Sazerac Rye
  • 3/4 oz Don Ciccio & Figli Nocino liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Sage Syrup*
  • 3 dashes of Lemon bitters
  • 3 dashes of Angostura bitters

Instructions:

Add ingredients together in a mixing glass and stir. Pour over ice in your favorite glass. We recommend a rocks glass.

*Sage Syrup Recipe

Bring a pot of water to a boil, then bring it down to a simmer.. Add in a bunch of fresh sage leaves to sit for 30 minutes. Strain the sage water, and be sure to press the extra water out of the leaves. Add 1 part sugar to 1 part sage water and stir until dissolved

Let us know if you have a cocktail recipe you love or if there’s a recipe that you want us to break down on social media with the hashtag, #TWLScocktail. Please drink responsibly.

Sazerac House is now bottling Sazerac Rye Whiskey in the heart of New Orleans, mere blocks from the historic original Sazerac House.

Sazerac Rye, an iconic whiskey long associated with New Orleans, is being bottled as part of the new guest experience, which opened last month, as well as production of Sazerac Rye and Peychaud’s Bitters on-site. The rye that is bottled is available for sale in the Sazerac House retail shop.

“We are so excited to put our bottling line to work. Sazerac Rye is the most awarded American Rye Whiskey and an integral ingredient in the Sazerac Cocktail,” said David Bock, distillery operations manager at Sazerac House. “Now guests visiting the Sazerac House who have explored our exhibits and learned about the illustrious history of the Official Cocktail of New Orleans, the Sazerac Cocktail, can bring a bottle of Sazerac Rye from the Sazerac house home with them to make their own cocktails.”

The bulk of Sazerac Rye is currently produced and bottled at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, and now a small portion of it is produced and aged at Buffalo Trace will be bottled at the Sazerac House. In the coming months, the Sazerac House will be producing Sazerac Rye on its own 500-gallon capacity still, which will then be bottled on-site at Sazerac House following aging at Buffalo Trace.

The bottling line at the Sazerac House was manufactured by US Bottlers Machinery, a family-owned business which started in 1906 in Charlotte.

The bottles from the inaugural bottling at Sazerac House will be specially-marked and available for sale there for $27.
