Basquiat’s iconic artwork comes back to New York’s Great Jones Street via Great Jones Distilling Co.’s The Great Jones x Jean-Michel Basquiat: Empire Edition.

Just down the block from the site of his apartment and famous art studio in Noho, the distillery has unveiled a brand-new special edition bourbon bottle featuring Basquiat’s “Mecca” (1982). The piece is known for helping establish him as an artist in Downtown Manhattan, featuring the New York City skyline and Basquiat’s trademark crown. The artwork was selected for its vivid portrayal of New York’s skyline, symbolizing the city’s energy and allure. The distinctive graphic encapsulates Basquiat’s electrifying impact on the New York art scene and serves as a testament to his unparalleled vision and enduring influence on contemporary art with its bold strokes and arresting imagery. The bottle was created in collaboration with Artestar, a global licensing agency and creative consultancy representing high-profile artists, photographers, designers, and creatives.

This special edition celebrates New York City via its art, its agriculture and its whiskey. Great Jones is 100% New York Bburbon, made of ingredients grown in the Hudson Valley, distilled at the Great Jones Distillery in Manhattan, aged in New American Oak barrels, and finally cut to proof with Catskill Mountain water.

“In continuing our partnership with Jean-Michel Basquiat, we are proud to align Great Jones Whiskey with a New York icon whose art represents the vibrant culture of downtown New York,” said Lander Otegui, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Proximo Spirits. “With this special edition bottle release we are paying homage to Basquiat’s legacy on Great Jones Street, while also setting a new standard for craft distilling in Manhattan using entirely New York ingredients, to make our award-winning whiskeys.”

In addition to the whiskey release, this campaign also includes a capsule collection of merchandise, including a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and bucket hat, produced and designed by Rome Pays Off. Each piece features Basquiat’s “Mecca” graphic.

You can visit the Great Jones Distillery at 686 Broadway to purchase a bottle of the Basquiat-decorated whiskey or to enjoy signature cocktails inspired by Basquiat’s legacy, created by the Great Jones Head Mixologist, Collin Frazier.

The Great Jones x Jean-Michel Basquiat: Empire Edition is on sale now at the Great Jones Distillery and throughout the New York metro area for $39.99.

Bushmills Irish Whiskey, the world’s oldest licensed distillery, celebrated 415 years of whiskey heritage with the opening of its new Causeway Distillery.

The opening is part of parent company Proximo’s £60 million investment in its Irish single malt distilling and ageing facility at Bushmills over the past five years. The 39,000 sq ft facility, valued at £37 million, is situated on Ireland’s north coast and blends tech with craft to double production at the Bushmills site.

With the brand experiencing increasing demand across the globe, the challenge in extending operations to the new distillery has been to maintain the brand’s essential taste and character. To achieve this, Bushmills has combined generations of knowledge and experience with the technical excellence of the new distillery and its processes. The new Causeway Distillery deploys the latest thermal technology, which reduces energy usage by 30%, and state-of-the-art distilling innovations that have boosted material consumption efficiency by up to 10%.

The distillery takes its name from the Giant’s Causeway, the legendary landmark, which has inspired Bushmills’ whiskey-makers for centuries. The designers have sought to pay homage to this natural wonder on the distillery’s doorstep with a visually arresting structure made of local basalt and limestone, incorporating interlocking and geometric features.

Colum Egan, the Master Distiller at Bushmills, said the expansion marked the “start of an exciting new chapter.”
“We are obsessed with exceptional whiskeys – the ingredients, the processes, the wood, the ageing,” said Egan. “Our second distillery represents a great step forward in ensuring generations to come will enjoy our renowned signature triple-distilled single malts alongside the innovations of the future.”

The investment in the Causeway Distillery marks Proximo’s unwavering commitment to accelerating the growth of the Bushmills portfolio, which saw depletions grow over 10% in 2022, passing one million case sales for the first time in its long legacy.

To celebrate the opening of the new distillery, Bushmills introduces two high-end additions to its range of products – a 25 Year Old and 30 Year Old Single Malt. With the 30 Year Old set to retail at a top price of $2,200 a bottle, the company describes the launch as a “bold entry into the ultra-prestige” market.

“Today, as we look to the future, it is fitting to release these two rare expressions,” said Alex Thomas, Bushmills Master Blender. “They are a testament to our passion for aged single malt. Maturing patiently and cared for by a generation of skilled craftspeople, these refined whiskeys have spent a lifetime in hand-selected oak casks and are now ready to take their place as true legends of Irish single malt.”

Bushmills’ owners Proximo are also set to capitalize on the area’s popularity as a tourist destination. Plans for a visitor experience at the new distillery signal an exciting boost for Irish whiskey tourism and the opportunity to engage new global whiskey lovers. Visitors can expect an immersive experience that includes Sharvagh House – linked to Hugh Anderson, one of Bushmills great whiskey pioneers – bridging the old and new worlds of whiskey-making in the region.

A whiskey is distilled in New York City. For more than 100 years, that was not the case. That changed with last week’s opening of the Great Jones Distilling Co., Manhattan’s first and only legal whiskey distillery since Prohibition.

Great Jones’ six-year construction journey has overcome city regulations, centuries-old fire codes and a global pandemic to give New Yorkers their own whiskey distillery. The result is now a 28,000 square-foot space located at 686 Broadway, which encompasses a custom-built and engineered distillery where people can enjoy distillery tours and tasting experiences, as well as a restaurant, speakeasy and event venue, which will open in September.

Great Jones was founded by Proximo Spirits (best known for Bushmills, Stranahan’s and Jose Cuervo) and the vision of owner and 11th generation spirits-maker Juan Domingo Beckmann. The idea was born from the belief that the best spirits should be the embodiment of their origins, threading the history of bourbon in New York to the present day. The whiskies are made exclusively with grains grown in Upstate New York’s Black Dirt region, less than two hours north of Manhattan.

“The opening of Great Jones Distilling Co. represents a landmark moment for spirits and New York City history, bringing the craft of whiskey distillation back to Manhattan after 100 years,” said Juan Domingo Beckmann, Founder of Great Jones Distilling Co. and Proximo Spirits. “For 11 generations my family has crafted some of the world’s leading spirits, and we are proud to introduce a bourbon that truly embodies the best of New York State ingredients and the ‘lightning in a bottle’ energy of Manhattan. The Great Jones Distillery will give the city a new spirits legacy, and is dedicated to the resiliency and hustle that New Yorkers have shown to the world over this past year.”

With the opening of Great Jones comes the introduction of three new whiskies: Great Jones Straight Bourbon, Great Jones Four Grain Bourbon and Great Jones Rye Whiskey. The three signature expressions are made from 100% New York-sourced grain, and have been aging for the past five years in new charred American oak barrels in upstate New York in preparation for the distillery opening.

The building of the expansive distillery space, designed in partnership with Groundswell Design Group, conquered many unique challenges. Located in an area of the city with a rich history from the Prohibition era, the 82-year-old building had to be reinforced deep below ground to support the custom combination copper pot still with two columns housed on the second floor, navigating the subway system that runs below the building. During the renovation, a secret tunnel was discovered, thought to be used to transport whiskey and other spirits under the streets of New York. This tunnel now runs directly behind the speakeasy set to open this fall.

“As New York City enters a new era of hospitality and entertainment, the experience at Great Jones Distilling Co. brings renewed energy and employment opportunities to the NoHo neighborhood,” said Mike Keyes, President & Chief Executive Officer of Proximo Spirits. “Great Jones Distilling Co. will create more than 100 new jobs, supporting the much needed recovery and resurgence of the hospitality industry. We look forward to opening our doors this summer to New Yorkers and tourists looking for unique ways to enjoy time together again,” continued Keyes.

At Great Jones Distilling Co., visitors will be able to enjoy distillery tours and guided whiskey tastings. The Restaurant at Great Jones, which opens in September, will be helmed by Executive Chef Adam Raksin, and will offer a contemporary menu focused on locally sourced New York ingredients. Other distillery features The Speakeasy, intimate underground bar that will offer a restaurant and exclusive tasting menu; The Lounge, an enclave for guests as well as private events; and The Shop, where the three signature spirits and a selection of merchandise will be available for purchase. See the gallery below for more images.

Great Jones Distilling Co. is open every Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 10pm.
