There’s a new bottled-in-bond whiskey in town! High West has officially released its first Bottled-in-Bond expression.

Aged for 5 years and featuring a blend of 80% rye and 20% malted rye for the mashbill, this rye whiskey exemplifies High West’s whiskey-making techniques and processes by adhering to the quality standards set by The Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 – the nation’s first consumer protection law that protected people from drinking tainted whiskey.

Crafted at the Utah distillery, its Bottled-in-Bond whiskey is aged for a minimum of four years in a federally bonded warehouse and bottled at 100 proof.

High West’s Bottled-In-Bond Rye Whiskey is available for $79.99.

Ogden’s Own Distillery first released its new Porter’s Small Batch Rye Whiskey last May. A 95/5 blend of rye and barley, this straight rye whiskey has been aging in heavy charred, new oak barrels for over three years.

Porter’s Rye Whiskey has aged for over three years at 111 proof then blended down to 90 proof with Ogden’s Own Distillery’s signature water blend used for its Five Wives Vodka.

“We’ve had these barrels in the warehouse for quite some time now,” said Tim Smith, who heads up the blending and production side of Ogden Own Distillery. “We’re pleased how the whiskey has matured over the last year and are ready to get it out to the public.”

Rye whiskey was the most popular form of whiskey in America until Prohibition in 1919. It’s has been going through a resurgence in recent years, and Ogden’s Own decided it would be the best place to begin to introduce new products in the whiskey category.

“We listened to consumers and feel confident they will like the spice, mouthfeel, and complexity of this rye,” said Ogden Own Distillery CEO Steve Conlin.

“We watched as the temperature fluctuations of the last winter dramatically impacted the development of the flavor as the temperature of barrels moved in relation,” Smith added. “You could taste distinct differences monthly.”

Ogden’s Own Distillery has also done a redesign on their “Porter’s” branding to differentiate their straight whiskey from their line-up of flavored whiskey liqueurs. The new design features Porter’s face moved to the rear of the bottle and is seen peering through the glass. The labels made from a real wood veneer.”

Ogden’s Own released approximately 1,000 cases of Porter’s Rye last year.

Whiskey isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Utah (at least not for me), but Park City has quite a craft distilling scene.

Among its distilleries is Alpine Distilling, whose Lafayette Spiced Bourbon was inspired by founder and master distiller Rob Sergent’s great-grandmother, Granny Babe, who would soak ripe stone fruit from her Kentucky farm in moonshine to add flavor. We bet Granny Babe would be a fan of this week’s featured cocktail.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients and shake in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake again. Double strain the cocktail in a martini glass. Garnish with lemon zest and shaved cinnamon. Blow torch the center of the cocktail for added flair.

Let us know if you have a cocktail recipe you love or if there’s a recipe that you want us to break down on social media with the hashtag, #TWLcocktail. Please drink responsibly.
