With the pandemic continuing to change the way we all live our lives, there have been some who’ve been able to make the best of of a difficult situation like Ghost Bar. The New York-based digital cocktail delivery service that launched last month.

Created by Ning (Amelie) Kang and Yishu He, owners and partners of MáLà Project, Ghost Bar’s cocktail menu offers a wide range of classic cocktails, such as Last Word and Sazerac, and creative concoctions, like the Dragon Fruit Daiquiri and Longest Island, a Baijiu-based riff on a Long Island Iced Tea.

“Now with respect to social distancing and many bars closing, you can only drink so many Whisky on the Rocks at home without wanting something more easygoing,” says Amelie Kang, Co-Founder of Ghost Bar. “And making drinks at home, getting a few bottles of liquor, juicing, and preparing the ice…can be quite a commitment. Sometimes I wish there’s a quick and easy solution to a nice cocktail, and I think many people want the same.”

The team was rounded out by fellow bartender Lee Burger (Devon, Subject, and Butter & Scotch). “We wanted to create a no-frills bar that can bring a drink to you when you need it, and it should take about the same time as postmating groceries from a bodega,” Kang says. “People don’t need to go through the hassle of searching for the perfect cocktail on multiple restaurant websites anymore. Ghost Bar has a wide enough range to fix your cocktail cravings. It’s a no brainer solution.”

Ghost Bar is currently available for delivery in Midtown Manhattan via its website, Grubhub, Postmates, and HungryPanda daily from 11:30am – 10pm ET. Drink starts from $12. They will be expanding to all Manhattan and tri-borough areas in the coming months.

New York Distilling Company is launching a virtual cocktail competition for New York State bartenders as a way to help support the community.

The competition is based on an original cocktail featuring Ragtime Rye New York Straight Whiskey. If you don’t have Ragtime, use another whiskey. If you can’t find or don’t have any ingredients, you can still enter by sending a video with the story and recipe of your cocktail. Ingredients should be readily available at any regular grocery store. Your original cocktail may contain up to 5 ingredients plus a garnish, if you choose.

To show their support for the hospitality industry, the Brooklyn-based distillery and bar are working with bar owner Julie Reiner (Clover Club, Leyanda), author Robert Simonson (The Martini Cocktail), and Drinks historian and author Dave Wondrich (Imbibe!) who will judge each cocktail submission alongside New York Distilling Company’s founders Allen Katz and Tom Potter.

Each of the five finalists will each receive a $200 gift card. The winner of the competition will select their own private Single Barrel of Ragtime Rye from which six (6) cases will be bottled with a Personalized Label of their choosing and at a proof of their choosing based on Cask Strength 112, Bottled In Bond 100, or 90.4.

To enter, bartenders will need to post a video to Instagram with the hashtag #TogetherWithRye and tag @nydistilling (BTW, make sure your profile is public). You can also send a video entry (5 minutes or less) to Allen Katz at allen@nydistilng.com by April 13.

Katz will batch the submissions of the five finalists and deliver them to Reiner, Simonson and Wondrich in 200ml glass containers. They will judge the finalists based on taste, originality of name and concept, creativity of concept and presentation.

Winners will be announced in May.

As the weather starts to change and hearts turn to Spring, seems like a perfect time to feature The Bluebird Cocktail Room and Pub.

Based in Baltimore, this award-winning literary-themed bar and whiskey-focused English-style pub. The latter is said to have the Mid-Atlantic’s most coveted whiskey collection, including Blood Oath Pact #5, Whistlepig Farmstock, Bowman Brothers Small Batch, Kavalan Vinho Barrique “Soloist”, Yamazaki 18 Year Single Malt and more. On a recent trip, we tried quite a few and have to say we weren’t disappointed.

Just because you love whiskey, it doesn’t mean you should forgo the Cocktail Room upstairs. The encyclopedic menu (meant in a good way) offers a host of classic and seasonal cocktails for all palates. I thoroughly enjoyed their Old Fashioned made with Old Grand-Dad Bonded Bourbon and homemade bitters.

Given the recent opening of Guinness Open Gate Brewery and The Sagamore Pendry Baltimore’s whiskey bar, The Canon Room, there’s no doubt that Baltimore is quickly becoming a great town to drink in. Jus make sure you stop into the Bluebird while you’re there.

A great meal and a balanced cocktail is all that we ask for when we go out to eat. San Diego’s Fort Oak, a seafood-focused, wood-fired eatery located in the city’s Mission Hills neighborhood, offers both and scenery to match.

Opened by TRUST Restaurant and Executive Chef Brad Wise in a converted auto dealership, Fort Oak is one of the highest rated restaurants to open in the city this year. And while everyone is talking about their food (and rightly so), we think their cocktails are equally on par. For example, the Roadmaster, their house Old Fashioned with bourbon, orange black pepper oleo and bitters. And yes, it is garnished with bacon — if you’re into that sort of thing.

If you’re looking for something low ABV but with whiskey, they have the Wagoneer — amaro, rye, lemon, honey, orange bitters and absinthe rinse.

If you’re into light spirits, beer or wine, they also have a variety of options. And all cocktails are named after cars as the restaurant is located in a former auto dealership as you can tell as you walk into the bar area. There are additional automotive accents throughout the venue.

Cocktails with a view always taste a little better. And this week’s bar has panoramic views of Santa Monica Beach, so you know the drinks are extra tasty. Perched atop the historic Hotel Shangri-La, Onyx is a rooftop lounge that offers both classic cocktails and colorful concoctions reminiscent of California.

When we were there earlier this year, we started with their Ooh La La Mojitos flight (we know… it’s not whiskey), five full-size cocktails —Strawberry, Blackberry, Passion Fruit, Cotton Candy and the Classic. Made to be shared, even there are only two of you, this is definitely “Instagrammable.” Other cocktails include Waterloo Sunset (their take on an Old Fashioned with Old Forester), Tamietini (their signature Martini with Ketel One) and The Last Tango (a mezcal margarita with Montelobos). They also have three curated Boilermakers — Whistlepig & Stella Artois, Jack Daniel’s & Blue Moon, and Knob Creek and Newcastle.

The hotel recently opened their new rooftop dining space next door, Terrace at Onyx, where they make tableside martinis from a martini cart that circulates through the restaurant.

If you’re in New York this summer and you’re not drinking your cocktails or whiskey on a rooftop, are you really drinking? Of course you are, but those ‘gram photos may not be as enviable. This week’s pick offers both views (word to Drake) and amazing drinks.

The Lookup – located atop the soon-to-be Kixby hotel in Midtown Manhattan, is the newest outpost for renowned bartender Pioneer Mixologist Pamela Wiznitzer (Seamstress, Gibson + Luce). She’s teamed with Black Tap Craft Beer & Burgers‘ Chris Barish and Julie Mulligan to create a destination for guests to “look up from their phones and be in the moment”… or to get a photo of themselves with the Empire State Building up close and personal.

Wiznitzer’s bar program features a host original “order by number” cocktails like the #3, a riff on a Whisky Smash with rye, lemon, mint, red wine and a liquor-infused sorbet; #5, a refreshing watermelon drink with gin, lemon, mastiha, cucumber; and #2, a Margarita-Paloma blend with tequila, grapefruit, lime, ancho chili, pomegranate, pink sea salt. Each cocktail is priced at $16. They also feature all the classics that you know and love like Negronis, Old Fashioneds and Manhattans.

The Lookup also offers a menu of “elevated” bar food items including Whipped Green Chile Beer Cheese, Sriracha Carrot Hummus, Truffle Parmesan seasoned popcorn, rosé-infused meyer lemon shrimp cocktail, and Dippin’ Dots!

The space is divided into three zones with stadium seating, high-top tables and lounge areas – all anchored by a central peninsula bar.

Our Bar of the Week profiles have been very NYC-centric lately, so we decided to change all that by traveling… New Jersey! Don’t laugh, many of the TWL fam, including yours truly, are proud New Jerseyans. Also, Jersey has a ton of great craft cocktail bars, beer gardens and more. This week, we will be focusing on Jersey City’s Piggyback Bar

The brainchild of Chef Leah Cohen (Top Chef) and her husband/business partner Ben Byruch, Piggyback is descried as “a casual Asian American tavern with a whimsical menu” and shares its southeast Asian flavors with Pig&Khao, the duo’s first restaurant in New York.

The first thing you will notice about Piggyback are its amazing views. Located on the Hudson River, the entire bar has beautiful, unobstructed views of lower Manhattan including the World Trade Center. You can sit outside during the warmer months, as we did, to enjoy the sights and sounds.

Your other senses will enjoy as well as Piggyback has a great cocktail program that includes several whiskey-focused drinks like Rocky & Bullwinkle, which includes Wild Turkey Rye, Créme de Cacao and Amaro, and Ex-Pig, an Old Fashioned riff which features Misunderstood Whiskey, lime and mint, or their bacon-washed pickleback shot made with their own bacon-washed whiskey and homemade pickle juice.

For non-whiskey drinkers, they have the Rum Drink (yes, that’s what it’s called) and the gin, aperol and green chartreuse Mind On My Money. However, they do change their cocktail program frequently so these drinks may or may not still be on the menu when you visit.

The menu features signature dishes like the Piggyback Ribs, topped with their house barbecue sauce and crispy garlic; Disco Phories, which is cheese sauce, pho gravy, braised short rib and chilies over waffle fries, and CC M&C, which is chew cheong noodles, cheese sauce and panko. We enjoyed the charred edamame and bubble waffle burrata.

SPIN, the well-known ping pong social club founded in New York City with locations across North America recently opened SPIN 54. Located at 7 East 54th Street in Midtown Manhattan, this restaurant/social club is perfect for either afterwork drinks or a fun date night.

The menu curation with SPIN, its Executive Chef Chad Bowser and award-winning chef Antoine Westermann, best known as the founder of the first poultry centric cuisine at Le Coq Rico, came together thanks to a personal friendship between Westermann and SPIN co-founder Franck Raharinosy and a shared commitment and food philosophy. The chefs created menus for lunch, happy hour and late night that feature soups, croquettes as a playful take on the ping pong ball and desserts. Several dishes are served on paddles instead of classic wood boards, orange colored Rouille Mayonnaise matches the brand’s aesthetic and more.

The beverage program is just as impressive spotlighting SPIN’s signatures including the Marty Resiman and seasonal mule, along with additional beverages exclusive to the venue. Drinks exclusive to SPIN54 include Basil Hayden’s Manhattan (BH Bourbon, BH Dark Rye, Punt e Mes and Bitters), Chic Greek (The Botanist Gin, Kikori Whiskey, aged Aquavit, matcha, lime, Greek yogurt, sea salt) and The Sixth Burro (tequila, ancho reyes verde, Cointreau, amaro sfumato, maple, lime peppers, sal de gusano). There is also be an array of beers on tap and wine selections.

[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”10″ display=”basic_slideshow”]

The venue holds up to 200 people including 9 ping pong tables, a center bar, a private room with ribbed glass creating a speakeasy feel, and artistic plays on Manhattan with its “post no bills” wheatpaste concept throughout the space. The venue features retractable windows and outdoor seating that will open up during the summer.

SPIN 54 will continue the brand’s Players’ Night— Friday evenings centered around communal games, $9 after 9PM (unlimited ping pong play for $9) and have other events.

The Midtown outpost comes ten years after their successful 2009 launch in Flatiron. Since then, the brand has expanded with nine locations nationwide and continues to champion the idea of uniting people, through the simple game of ping pong.
