WhistlePig Whiskey has set up shop in Louisville with its The WhistlePig Vault. Set in a 1911 Louisville security bank, the outpost is an immersive destination set to “stir up” the Bourbon Country experience.

historic bank architecture, hidden design details, hands-on customization of collectible bottles, rare whiskey tastings. Its new home at 403 East Market Street showcases the distillery’s collection of rye, bourbon and single malt whiskeys.

“WhistlePig was founded 880 miles from the Bourbon heartland, but the early seeds were planted here in Kentucky. The Vault pays homage to our founding Distiller, Dave Pickerell, who got his start in the Bluegrass State before going off the grid to start the Rye Revolution in Vermont,” said WhistlePig CEO Charles Gibb. “Returning to Kentucky with The Vault is a full-circle moment for us. To truly push the boundaries of American whiskey making, WhistlePig had to build a place apart and craft new and unique whiskeys with zero generations of family tradition. We’ve made our own rules and are proud to share that with Bourbon Country friends and connoisseurs.”

Marquee cocktail service in the Bank Lobby Bar, complete with “The Flying Pig,” a signature serve crafted with WhistlePig 10 Snout-to-Tail Bourbon and delivered in a pneumatic ATM tube. Private and shared hosted tastings will be in the Mezzanine Blending Room. Visitors will be able to craft their own blend of WhistlePig Old World Rye – Aged 12 Years. At The Whiskey Exchange retail experience, visitors can purchase their custom WhistlePig 10 PiggyBank Rye Limited Edition bottles.

The WhistlePig Vault is now open to the public.

WhistlePig Whiskey sources unique barrels from around the world to finish their rye whiskey for their annual The Boss Hog release. This year, the Vermont distillery chose a Mexican-inspired barrel for The Boss Hog XII: Feather & Flame.

The expression is inspired by two ancient Aztec drinks: pulque (an ancestral fermented agave beverage) and xocolatl (the bitter and spicy cocoa beans drink). When the WhistlePig team traveled to central Mexico and the two flavors converged, they were struck with inspiration for the next chapter of The Boss Hog’s story of exploration.

is bottled between 104.8 – 108.4 Proof

After aging the whiskey in new American Oak barrels, the Aztec flavors are added in maturation within barrels seasoned with pulque curado crafted, cacao, and Mexican chiltepín, guajillo, and pasilla peppers.

“Pulque and xocolatl are two powerful flavors in central Mexico. Pulque’s continuous fermentation process means it has to be consumed quickly before it spoils, and xocolatl doesn’t match what most people think of as ‘chocolate,’” said Meghan Ireland, Head Blender at WhistlePig. “We embraced the strength and power of the flavors and created the world’s first whiskey finished in pulque curado de cacao barrels to bring a rich, savory, aromatic, and earthy elevation to the complex character of Rye Whiskey.”

On top of each bottle of The Boss Hog XII: Feather & Flame is a collectible feathered pig deity wielding an Aztec chocolate whiskey – handcrafted at Danforth Pewter in Vermont. The limited edition is enclosed in a gift box depicting the edition’s mythologized origin story, reimagined through Aztec art. Each box also features one of twelve unique panels, and the back label of each bottle is embedded with NFC authentication.

WhistlePig Whiskey’s limited-edition The Boss Hog XII: Feather & Flame is available for $599.99.

The Editorial team took a break for Dry January (well, damp) but we’re back and the same as ever. Since we missed January releases, will use this post as our way as covering as much of those releases as we missed. Please don’t hate us if we missed yours.

All Nations Kentucky Straight Bourbon – Premium spirits company Staghorn is relaunching the entire whiskey line up from its Garrard County Distilling Co. beginning with its new flagship whiskey. The 5- to 7-year-old blend from notable Kentucky distilling stalwarts showcases the skill of its panel of four award-winning whiskey experts behind the selection. All Nations engages a panel with decades of experience at such distillers as Jim Beam, Barton, MGP and Bluegrass to create its whiskey.  With Garrard County coming online last January, the whiskey was crafted with existing stocks from distilleries across the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The mash bills are: 75% corn, 12% rye, 13% malted barley; 70% corn, 21% rye, 9% malted barley; and 64% corn, 24% rye, 12% malted barley, respectively. The whiskey was aged in #4 alligator char barrels in Clermont, Danville, Owensboro, and Boston, KY before arriving for a final aging at Garrard County in Lancaster, KY. All Nations is blended onsite using water sourced from the limestone-rich Lancaster Public Spring aquifer, first tapped by settlers in 1776.

Barrell Foundation Double Barrel – – Barrell Craft Spirits launched this expression as a line extension of Barrell Foundation, the company’s first non-cask strength bourbon. The expression is a blend of Kentucky (8 year), Indiana (5, 6, and 9 year), Tennessee (8 year), and Maryland (5 and 6 year) bourbons. It features a derived mashbill of 73% corn, 23% rye, and 4% malted barley and is bottled at 100 proof.

Doc Holiday Bottled In BondWorld Whiskey Society announced the launch of its latest release, a blend of 7, 8, 10, 11 and 15 year-old expressions. Made at a single distillery during one distilling season, this bourbon is aged for no less than four years in a federally bonded warehouse.

Knob Creek x Eli Manning 2025 Bold Pick – Knob Creek teamed with the Super Bowl champion for this limited-edition single barrel bourbon. Hand-selected by Manning and Eighth Generation Master Distiller Freddie Noe, the expression is aged for a minimum of nine years in American white oak barrels and bottled at 120 proof.

Old Forester Whiskey Row 1910 – For The Love of Bourbon. Photographer – Leslie Grow. Prop Stylist – Amy Taylor. Drink Stylist – Laura Kinsey Dolph. Wardrobe Stylist – Amiee Byrne.

Old Forester 1924 – Returning to shelves for a second year, this 10-year-old 100-proof bourbon features a mash bill of 79% corn, 11% rye and 10% malted barley rather than the traditional Old Forester recipe. It is the newest addition to the brand’s Whiskey Row Series, a collection of Old Forester expressions that commemorate distinguishable moments from the brand’s 153-year history.

Old Forester The 117 Series – This limited-edition whisky derived from an extra-long double-barreling process and commemorates the October 22, 1910 distillery fire at 117 Main Street. A batch of mature whisky, ready to be bottled, was then re-barreled in new barrels so it could be removed due to the fire damage. What emerged from the re-barreling was Old Fine Whisky. For Extra Old, the brand left the 1910 whiskey aging in a secondary barrel.

WhistlePig Snout to Tail 10 Year Bourbon – After a decade of releasing ryes, WhistlePig is going “whole hog” with this 10 year old 88 proof bourbon finished in two toasted barrel heads – a Vermont oak medium toast (“the snout”) and a Vermont oak smoked maple wood toast (“the tail”). Its release celebrates with the upcoming opening of WhistlePig’s Louisville outpost,The WhistlePig PiggyBank, in summer 2025.

Pigs may not fly but they do race now. WhistlePig Whiskey teamed with Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake for its PiggyBack Legends Series: Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake Barrel, a high Rye Whiskey selected by the Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake drivers.

The third iteration in WhistlePig’s Single Barrel PiggyBack Legends Series, the Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake Barrel is bottled at 96.77 proof, a nod to Valtteri Bottas’ racing number, 77, and the precision of racing. Inspired by Zhou Guanyu, the first Chinese F1 driver, this Rye Whiskey is finished with lychee and oolong tea.

Like Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake’s signature C43 racing vehicles, trial barrels were tested in the team’s wind tunnel in Switzerland before hitting the track. Select barrels then endured varying levels of G-Forces at the WhistlePig farm and distillery for the finishing touch, accelerating the interaction between the whiskey and the wood, staying true to the physical nature of Formula 1.

“Partnering with WhistlePig has been a very exciting experience. Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake is dedicated to being the best on the track, and the crew at WhistlePig is fearless in their pursuit to create the best whiskey out there,” said Valtteri Bottas, Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake’s driver. “We’re really looking forward to fans tasting our custom Rye Whiskey and raising a glass to the rookies, veterans, legends and the exhilarating sport of F1.”

“Joining forces with WhistlePig to release a Single Barrel Rye Whiskey that represents my culture and team has been an honor,” said Zhou Guanyu, Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake’s driver. “Formula 1 brings together fearless, thrill-seeking motorsports professionals, and WhistlePig has a shared passion for boundary-pushing innovation. Together, we’ve selected something alarmingly good for fans to enjoy this season when the cars are not on track.”

Fans and collectors have followed WhistlePig PiggyBack Legends Series, celebrating those who give 100% in the name of greatness, since its launch last March with Major League Baseball Hall of Famer David “Big Papi” Ortiz, followed by Country music duo Brothers Osborne in November.

“We’re taking our third Legends Series release on a ryed like never before,” said Meghan Ireland, WhistlePig Head Blender. “Our experiments with dynamic aging went full throttle during finishing trials at the Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake wind tunnel, in turn inspiring new ways to expose barrels to G-forces back at the WhistlePig Farm. The herbal and floral notes of the lychee and tea barrel selected with the team create a new, podium-topping experience for PiggyBack Rye.”

WhistlePig’s Limited Edition Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake Barrel is available for purchase online starting for $49.99. Consumers can win VIP merchandise by scanning the QR code on the back of each bottle.

It’s short work week here at The Whiskey Lifestyle HQ but we wanted to show our thanks to you our readers by giving you a list of whiskeys that you should enjoy this Thanksgiving. Whether you’re a newbie or aficionado, these 12 whiskeys will both give you and keep you in the holiday “spirit.” Also, be sure to take advantage of our Black Friday Sale.

Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon – The Louisville-based distillery brought back this expression after three years by taking their bourbon and then aging it for an additional period in a second custom barrels that are 18-month air dried wood and then toasted.

Four Roses Single Barrel D.I.Y.1 Cooper’s Hammer – Four Roses combines its five proprietary yeast strains with two separate mashbills to produce 10 distinct Bourbon recipes. A limited number of barrels from the 10 recipes present themselves to their Master Distiller, xx. After a private tasting, a selection of barrels are bottled in limited quantities of 250 or less. Bourbon connoisseur OJ Lima and 58 Wine & Liquor teamed to select their own barrel for the first D.I.Y. release.

Remus Repeal Reserve Series II – Crafted in honor of Prohibition Repeal Day (Dec. 5), this limited release features a medley of two mashbills from 2007 and 2008. The nose shows maple with vanilla, caramel, toasted oak and bold spice, with tastes of vanilla, brown spice, smoke and maple on the finish.

Russell’s Reserve 10 Year Old – Master distillers and premier whiskey makers Jimmy and Eddie Russell have brought nearly 100 years of combined experience to craft this. Bottled at 90 proof, this hand selected small batch bourbon has caramel and vanilla notes and a smooth finish.

FEW American Whiskey – Distilled in Evanston, IL, this is a blend of their Bourbon and Rye, along with an experimental cherrywood-smoked Malt Whiskey. The result is sweet, spicy and tart all at the same time.

WhistlePig Rye’s Boss Hog V – Sadly, the Vermont-based distillery recently lost their Master Distiller, Dave Pickerell. His legacy lives on via the most recent Boss Hog expression — The Spirit of Mauve is a 13 Year Straight Rye Whiskey finished in Calvados casks.

Heaven’s Door 10 Year Old Straight Bourbon – Released just last week from the Bob Dylan-fronted distillery, its is mellowed right after coming off the still using charcoal columns from aged Tennessee sugar maple trees, traditionally known as the “Lincoln County Process.” The lower rye mash bill lets the best of ten years of barrel aging to shine, highlighting the smooth notes of vanilla and hints of toasted almonds. More on this next week.

Powers Three Swallow – It’s not all about American whiskies, this Irish spirit is a modern representation of what the original Single Pot Still style that Powers used hundreds of years ago. Crafted from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, it is then matured in American bourbon barrels before finishing in aged sherry casks.

Uncle Nearest – Bring a little history to the table with this Tennessee Whiskey. Using local grains and the aforementioned Lincoln County Process, the same one that Nathan “Nearest” Green, the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States, helped perfect over 160 years ago.

Laphroaig 10 – This is the first scotch on our list because Thanksgiving is American holiday, but when we first tasted its bold, smokiness followed by a hint of seaweed and sweetness., we knew we had to include.

Highland Park 12 Year Old Viking Honor –  The second scotch on our list apparently is perfect for beer drinker. Highland Park partnered with the Minnesota Vikings for the 2018 season, where they served samples from their 30 foot Viking longship. And even if you’re boycotting the league like some of us are, you can still enjoy its balanced, malty tones and the subtle floral smoke.

Knob Creek Twice Barreled Rye – The newest expression in their extensive rye portfolio, it presents the rich and savory notes signature of the brand’s classic rye, amplified by oak and warm spice notes with a touch of sweetness from the secondary barreling process.

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours! Please drink responsibly.

WhistlePig-Boss-Hog-V

The Whiskey Lifestyle was on hand for the recent launch of WhistlePig Rye Whiskey’s The Boss Hog V: The Spirit of Mauve last week at New York’s posh Turret Penthouse at The Beekman. And from the drams we had, WhistlePig fans won’t be disappointed and Mauve, one of the brand’s founding celebrity pigs, would be proud.

As the biggest and best expression of WhistlePig, The Boss Hog is only produced when they feels they can create something superior to anything they have previously made. This marque fulfills the five promises WhistlePig makes to each edition of The Boss Hog: single barrel, bottled at barrel proof, powerfully complex, distinctly unique from anything they have done before, and stupendous. The Boss Hog V targets the senses with a unique balance between sweet and spiced flavors and a fine balance between American power and French sophistication.

As the fifth edition of The Boss Hog, The Spirit of Mauve is a celebration of Mauve, who passed away this past Valentine’s Day. Mauve’s lover, Mortimer, was tragically killed defending her honor in 2014, and was memorialized in The Boss Hog II: The Spirit of Mortimer. Mauve persevered for the sake of their son, Mortimer Jr. but likely died of a broken heart. The Spirit of Mauve is a 13 Year Straight Rye Whiskey finished in Calvados Casks in honor of her love of apples. Each bottle features a handcrafted Danforth pewter stopper in the shape of Mauve ascending to heaven and a casket-inspired gift box.

“The Spirit of Mauve is my favorite Boss Hog release so far. It is full flavored yet subtle, with lots of warm spice and apple notes. It’s like drinking Grandma’s apple pie.” explains Dave Pickerell, Master Distiller for WhistlePig.

The former editions of the line include The Boss Hog IV: The Black Prince (2017), which was named Best in Show at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, The Boss Hog III: The Independent (2015), the aforementioned Boss Hog II: The Spirit of Mortimer (2014) and The Boss Hog (2013). This newest edition is bottled at barrel proof and the suggested retail price is $499.99.

The DIY or “create your own” craze is not new to whiskey world.  Weller has done it and now the folks at WhistlePig Straight Rye Whiskey are following suit with its Reserve Barrel whiskey program.

The Vermont distillery’s first option is the 10 Year Single Barrel, where you get the chance to choose a barrel with a final product of 132 bottles of barrel strength custom whiskey.

For The 12 Year Single Bespoke Blend, you can create your own blend of European cask finish whiskies working with the WhistlePig distillers, pipets and beakers for a bespoke blend of whiskey.

Both programs receive custom labels for the final creations and you can have the opportunity to interact with the Chief Blender Pete Lynch, if you choose to pick their barrel at the WhistlePig Farm in Shoreham.

Prices for the Reserve Barrel will range from $11,000 – $19,000 depending on the marque (ranging from state to state) and fulfillment takes up to 12 weeks.
