Old Forester announces the latest release in its acclaimed 117 Series: Prohibition Era Still Proof. This limited-edition expression pays homage to the brand’s past as one of the few distilleries legally permitted to produce whiskey for medicinal purposes during Prohibition.

Bottled at 130 proof, this special release is a nod to the historical fact that Old Forester was distilled at 130 proof during the 100-day distiller’s holiday a few years prior to the repeal of Prohibition. During the 1930s, a select group of government-authorized distillers — including Old Forester — were granted licenses to replenish whiskey stocks for medicinal use.

“This release is a tribute to the ingenuity that allowed Old Forester to endure and emerge stronger during one of the most challenging periods for American whiskey,” said Caleb Trigo, Assistant Master Distillery of Old Forester. “This bourbon offers a glimpse into the intensity and authenticity of our Prohibition heritage.”

The release coincided with Repeal Day (Dec. 5), the date marking the end of Prohibition in 1933, when the 21st Amendment restored Americans’ right to enjoy bourbon once again.

Old Forester 117 Series: Prohibition Era Still Proof is available in limited quantities for $64.99.

The Editorial team took a break for Dry January (well, damp) but we’re back and the same as ever. Since we missed January releases, will use this post as our way as covering as much of those releases as we missed. Please don’t hate us if we missed yours.

All Nations Kentucky Straight Bourbon – Premium spirits company Staghorn is relaunching the entire whiskey line up from its Garrard County Distilling Co. beginning with its new flagship whiskey. The 5- to 7-year-old blend from notable Kentucky distilling stalwarts showcases the skill of its panel of four award-winning whiskey experts behind the selection. All Nations engages a panel with decades of experience at such distillers as Jim Beam, Barton, MGP and Bluegrass to create its whiskey.  With Garrard County coming online last January, the whiskey was crafted with existing stocks from distilleries across the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The mash bills are: 75% corn, 12% rye, 13% malted barley; 70% corn, 21% rye, 9% malted barley; and 64% corn, 24% rye, 12% malted barley, respectively. The whiskey was aged in #4 alligator char barrels in Clermont, Danville, Owensboro, and Boston, KY before arriving for a final aging at Garrard County in Lancaster, KY. All Nations is blended onsite using water sourced from the limestone-rich Lancaster Public Spring aquifer, first tapped by settlers in 1776.

Barrell Foundation Double Barrel – – Barrell Craft Spirits launched this expression as a line extension of Barrell Foundation, the company’s first non-cask strength bourbon. The expression is a blend of Kentucky (8 year), Indiana (5, 6, and 9 year), Tennessee (8 year), and Maryland (5 and 6 year) bourbons. It features a derived mashbill of 73% corn, 23% rye, and 4% malted barley and is bottled at 100 proof.

Doc Holiday Bottled In BondWorld Whiskey Society announced the launch of its latest release, a blend of 7, 8, 10, 11 and 15 year-old expressions. Made at a single distillery during one distilling season, this bourbon is aged for no less than four years in a federally bonded warehouse.

Knob Creek x Eli Manning 2025 Bold Pick – Knob Creek teamed with the Super Bowl champion for this limited-edition single barrel bourbon. Hand-selected by Manning and Eighth Generation Master Distiller Freddie Noe, the expression is aged for a minimum of nine years in American white oak barrels and bottled at 120 proof.

Old Forester 1924 – Returning to shelves for a second year, this 10-year-old 100-proof bourbon features a mash bill of 79% corn, 11% rye and 10% malted barley rather than the traditional Old Forester recipe. It is the newest addition to the brand’s Whiskey Row Series, a collection of Old Forester expressions that commemorate distinguishable moments from the brand’s 153-year history.

Old Forester The 117 Series – This limited-edition whisky derived from an extra-long double-barreling process and commemorates the October 22, 1910 distillery fire at 117 Main Street. A batch of mature whisky, ready to be bottled, was then re-barreled in new barrels so it could be removed due to the fire damage. What emerged from the re-barreling was Old Fine Whisky. For Extra Old, the brand left the 1910 whiskey aging in a secondary barrel.

WhistlePig Snout to Tail 10 Year Bourbon – After a decade of releasing ryes, WhistlePig is going “whole hog” with this 10 year old 88 proof bourbon finished in two toasted barrel heads – a Vermont oak medium toast (“the snout”) and a Vermont oak smoked maple wood toast (“the tail”). Its release celebrates with the upcoming opening of WhistlePig’s Louisville outpost,The WhistlePig PiggyBank, in summer 2025.

Old Forester has returned to its experimental bag with the newest release in its 117 series – Bottled in Bond.

In accordance with the 1897 Bottled in Bond Act, this whiskey is bottled from barrels filled during a single distillation season – late Spring of 2014. Bottled-in-bond is a designation that protects the integrity of aged spirits by ensuring each barrel is produced in a single distillation season by a single distillery. To meet the criteria, the spirit must also be matured in a U.S. bonded warehouse for at least four years and bottled at 100 proof.

“The heritage of Old Forester is uniquely tied to the Bottled in Bond movement as George Garvin Brown’s first bottled bourbon really set the stage for quality guarantee decades before the historic law went into effect,” said Old Forester Master Taster Melissa Rift. “This bonded expression as part of the 117 Series is a fantastic opportunity to look at a very small batch of bonded liquid and how it has developed from that single season to the offering we are launching today.”

Bottled in Bond marks the latest installment in the 117 Series, a limited-expression lineup that debuted in Spring 2021 and focuses on innovation and experimentation.

Old Forester 117 Series: Bottled in Bond is bottled at 100 proof and is available in limited quantities at the retail shop at Old Forester Distilling Co. and in select states for $59.99.

Today marks the 7th anniversary of the fire on Whiskey Row that nearly destroyed the historic block. Old Forester Distilling Co. has just announced the release of the fourth installment of The 117 Series – Whiskey Row Fire in honor of the occasion.

On July 7, 2015, a four-alarm fire ravaged the buildings on historic Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville. Teams of Louisville first responders were able to contain and extinguish the fire, preserving the site for the Old Forester Distillery at 117/119 West Main. The block is now home to restaurants, bars, a hotel and other businesses – and has become a tourist destination.

“I remember that day and that fire vividly,” Louisville Fire Chief Greg Frederick said. “We are extremely proud of our brave firefighters who risked their lives and saved the block.”

In 2020, members of the Louisville Fire Department, many of whom fought the blaze, selected eight single barrels from a lot filled the same day they extinguished the fire. All eight barrels sold out in two days and proceeds were donated to the Louisville Firefighter Disaster Fund. The remainder of the barrels filled that day slumbered an additional two years in the warehouse and are now batched together to create Whiskey Row Fire.

At nearly 7 years old – these barrels are fully mature and wise in character.

Today, Chief Frederick and Louisville Fire Department members were special guests of Old Forester and toured the distillery. In addition, Old Forester is making a charity donation to the Louisville Fire Department to help firefighters who are in distress.

The 117 Series is a limited-expression lineup that debuted in Spring 2021. It offers a deep dive, or deconstruction, on how either the individual Old Forester Whiskey Row Series expressions are crafted or highlights other historical moments of Old Forester’s history on W. Main Street.

Old Forester The 117 Series – Whiskey Row Fire is bottled at 100 proof and will be available now in limited quantities at the retail shop at Old Forester Distilling Co. for $59.99.
