With only 462 bottles produced, this limited release is created from a San Francisco Christmas Spiced Ale from 2015 that has been distilled twice in copper pot stills and then aged for nine years in once-used Old Potrero Straight Rye Whiskey barrels. The result is a 100 proof expression.

The third limited-edition of the Legacy Series, the expression is based on a reconstructed Maryland-style rye mash bill. The blend of 60% Rye (a blend of 8- to 12-year-old 95/5 rye sourced from Indiana),  30% Corn (20- to 25-year-old Canadian corn whiskey) and 10% Malt (an 8-year-old American single malt from Virginia)  is a sophisticated, modern reimagining of that mash bill, blending rare and aged stocks of whiskeys. The result is a 115.7 proof spirit.

To craft this new expression, Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall used a pre-prohibition style mash bill of 53% rye, the same mash bill as Woodford Reserve Rye, but bottled it at the strength of the collective batch of barrels: 125.1 proof.

After aging the whiskey in new American Oak barrels, the Aztec flavors are added in maturation within barrels seasoned with pulque curado crafted, cacao, and Mexican chiltepín, guajillo, and pasilla peppers.

“Pulque and xocolatl are two powerful flavors in central Mexico. A representation of Nevada’s high desert terroir, the 94-proof four-year-old whiskey is made with grains harvested from local fields, cultivated and overseen by Minden Mill, and distilled at the estate distillery. Master Distiller Joe O’Sullivan produces the expression using a mash bill of 80% rye, 10% soft white wheat and 10% estate-malted barley. It reflects the high-desert environment—where dramatic temperature swings and a tight 90-day rye growing season. The distillate is cut with water sourced from the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe.

Minden Mill Nevada Straight Rye is aged in a combination of Seguin Moreau New American and French oak barrels with a #3 char in traditional wooden rickhouses calibrated to mimic the temperature and humidity of Kentucky’s Nelson County.
