The Favorite Dram

This tune is the melody to an old drinking song/poem by the eighteenth-century poet Alasdair MacDonald. MacDonald was a passionate supporter of Bonnie Prince Charlie and wrote many Jacobite songs during the period. He continued to write in Gaelic even after the Battle of Culloden and his poem An Airce or “The Ark,” is a biting satire of the Whigs. The publication of the piece in a book of his poems caused such outrage amongst the authorities that copies held by the publisher were seized and burned at the Mercat Cross in Edinburgh by the common hangman.
